We’ve all heard the phrase “walk in their shoes.” It’s common advice to businesses. “Walk in your customer’s shoes and you’ll know how to sell them!”
And many companies say that’s what they do, which is mostly B.S…because it’s almost impossible. It’s almost impossible to fully understand how someone thinks and feels.
The problem is heuristics. We all suffer from it.
Especially right now.
Don’t get me wrong. Heuristics is absolutely critical to our survival, but it’s a double-edged sword. Heuristics colors everybody’s worldview and perspective (including mine), which can cause massive divides, like what’s happening now.
This week I talk about the major issues we’re facing in the world right now and why understanding how our heuristics can help or hurt the situation. Yes, it’s a business lesson, but it’s a bigger human question.
Civil discourse is welcome. Anything else is NOT.
Thank you for your honesty. You’re awesome Steve!
You’re very kind, Qrishawna.
Hey Steve,
Thought-provoking video…Not sure I agree or disagree with you?
Mission accomplished … You got me thinking!
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for commenting, Wayne. Answers come when true dialogue begins, not when both side dig their heels in the sand.
I agree with you that our heuristics guide us, and probably have resulted in most of us deciding that saying/doing nothing was better than doing/saying something. I see an awful lot of people admitting that this was wrong. Myself among them. Thanks for the dose of truth.
Thanks, Bill. Can’t say I wasn’t a little nervous when I published this. But I had to do something.
Thanks for the heuristics reminder and for sharing your stories. I don’t blame the African American community for protesting peacefully. Do not agree with the destruction that it turned into. The BLM group is a group they would best not be associated with – so maybe a different slogan would be better. They are in part responsible for instigating some of the destruction/violence. Yes, it reminded me of the 60’s. The blanket statement to defund the police departments isn’t useful either – but changes need to be made including accountability. We did win the war against slavery so all African Americans who are US citizens are free and should have the same rights as everyone else. We may not get to a perfect state, but we need to be better than we currently are. Food for some more thought, thanks Steve.
